Tractor-Trailer Crashes into Lawrenceville Mall

Thumbnail image for 584005_30246517.jpgA tractor-trailer crashed at a high rate of speed into a strip mall last week for reasons that are still under investigation. The crash ended the life of the driver. It is a miracle that no one else was hurt in this accident. I am particularly pleased that this is the case given my work as a Gwinnett County truck accident lawyer.

The truck ended up in a hair salon and restaurant located in the shopping mall. The salon and a restaurant next to it, were both damaged badly in the crash. These businesses were closed at the time of the crash and no one was in them, including employees. It was reported that a karate school in the mall was full of kids at the time of the crash, but that no one in that location was harmed.

There is no information yet as to what happened to cause the driver to veer off the road to to cross over two southbound lanes, crashing into the mall at 1195 Scenic Highway. The driver of the tractor-trailer was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. He might have had a medical emergency prior to the crash or the crash itself might be his cause of death. Early reports indicated that neither alcohol nor drugs had a role in this crash. It remains under investigation as to whether speed had any role in this accident.

The trucking industry in our country is regulated by the United States Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) which regulates the operation of commercial vehicles. The FMCSA promulgates many regulations that involve the detailed operations of trucking companies and drivers. These rules and regulations are intended to keep us all safer since trucks can be very dangerous vehicles when they are not properly maintained or driven. The FMCSA regulates every aspect of trucking, from the hours a driver can work to the way a truck is loaded to what equipment must be on the truck, and much much more.

We will keep readers informed of any new developments in the Lawrenceville truck accident. We are grateful that no one in the mall was harmed, but we are saddened by the loss of the driver’s life and hope that the investigation will resolve unanswered questions about the cause of this tragedy.
